2009 Fall Foliage Charity Summary

2009 marked the 10th anniversary of PCC's Fall Charity Fun Runs and it had to be one of the best ever.  We really got a break with the weather and it made for a wonderful day with a great group of people, driving their really cool cars on some fantastic roads while enjoying spectacular fall scenary, capped by a fabulous dinner at the Osceola Mill.

We had a total of 22 cars and 40 people that participated this year.  We also had four people that wanted to join us, but for various reasons could not, yet still graciously made a donation to our fund raising efforts for the UVa Medical Center for Parkinson's Disease Research. A big "thank you" to each of you as well.  Between the member contributions and a generous donation from Kevin and Kim Daly, the Osceola Mill proprietors and our hosts for dinner, we raised $620 this year all of which will be donated.  Special thanks to Audi of America for hosting those who started the morning caravan from the DC area to Harrisonburg, providing coffee, donuts, and gift DVDs.

Photos of the event have been posted on the chapter Flickr area.

2009 Spring VIR Event Wrapup Print
Well, another VIR is in the books. From the organization side of things we had a number of challenges this time. If anyone noticed, we were without our main man on the mic and on the grid Charlie Prietz; Paul Dyson, usually there to help out in registration decided that a cruise ship was a better way to spend a few days; and our trusty President Marc Nguyen didn't make it down either as he is in last stages of planning his upcoming wedding. There were a few others that couldn't make it or didn't get to the track until the second day. So, we had a lot of work ahead of us.

Overall, Registration and Tech Inspections went well and smooth on Sunday. A few key changes in the paperwork and onsite procedures seemed to help out quite a bit.  Plus being on a Sunday we didn't get the mass rush at the end like usual with everyone leaving home later.

Monday started off with a good rain in the morning. Made things a little tense on the track, but made GREAT skidpad weather! One of the THREE R8s in the field made an appearance on the skidpad exercises and holy moly does that car have some GRIP! No matter what we tried, it was near impossible to get that car to kick out the rear end! Such a beautiful car and sounds as great on the inside as it does the outside.

Monday evening was the traditional banquet dinner, delicious southern bbq prepared by the VIR kicthen staff, which followed by our charity raffle and auction.  Emceed by Rob Cernak, the raffle and auction grossed over $1800 towards our annual charity efforts.  Thanks to everyone for their generous donations!

Tuesday opened with plenty of sunshine and the event continued without a hitch, other than a HUGE storm that come up on us at the end of the day. Corner workers spotted a lot of lightning activity so they quickly shut the track down. Only the last three run groups got cut.  Although everyone got an hour head-start on their trips home, so maybe it wasn't all that bad.

So, let's wrap this up by recognizing all the people who contributed their time and efforts to making this event a success:

Pre-planning and organization:  Moses Bunting, Glenn Evans, Reggie Forster, Joe and Cel Holzer, Matt Hull, Jim Khoury, Marc Nguyen, and Erich Rainville.

Registration and Tech crews:  Moses Bunting, Will Haden, Joe and Cel Holzer, Jim Khoury, Roger Mecking, Neal Nystrom, Erich Rainville

Chief Instructors and Group Leaders:  Phil Ackley, John Sullivan, Thomas Buettner, and Nick Pinto

All of our instructors who so bravely climb into the passenger seat.

And last, but certainly not least, VIR's most excellent crew of pit bosses, corner workers and emergency personnel.

Thank you all and see you in November!

2008 Shenandoah Valley Fall Foliage Charity Fun Run Print

The Potomac-Chesapeake Chapter 2008 Shenandoah Valley Fall Foliage Charity Fun Run

“WHAT A FANTASTIC FUN RUN WE HAD!” On Saturday, October 18, 2008, the Potomac Chesapeake Chapter of the Audi Club North America sponsored the tenth running of the annual Shenandoah Valley Fall Charity Fun Run. In many ways it could be counted as one of the best, if not THEE best for many reasons.  A wide cross section of very interesting, diverse people of all ages, from varied demographics and occupations, some world travelers, some originally from other parts of the world, came together as one Saturday, some 35 in all. Most drivers and guests came from the Washington DC Metro area but others came from as far as far north-central New Jersey, western suburbs of Philadelphia and Huntington West Virginia. Just like the diversity of participants, the same held true for the cars, 22 in all; two RS4s, several S4s, an S8, several TTs, a predominant number of A4s, a 4000 CS, a Porsche Boxster S, a 911 GT3, a VW Golf R32 and a previous generation Jetta, a BMW Z3 M Series coupe and BMW 328i.

As always, the Fun Runners gather for breakfast at the eclectic Little Grill Collective in Harrisonburg, VA to get us energized for the day ahead. Once everyone had reassembled after breakfast it was time to get the Fun Run underway. The group of 22 cars were assigned into four “flights” with each an assigned flight leader to provide navigation and communication support. Co-coordinators John Galloway and Reggie Forster run a tight ship, starting the run with a briefing on the day’s event. They provided instruction for safety, routing directions, sequence of stops and urged patience be extended to all encountered over the approximate 190 mile route. All drivers were equipped with FRS radios to facilitate the organization and safety of each flight. The intent is to have a successful event for all to enjoy due in great part to the planning and execution of Reggie and John.

The first stop at the Sugar Tree Country Store in Virginia’s eastern Highland County helped cement the tone for the crisp autumn day with its authentic old time atmosphere. The large pot belly stove set in the center of the sales floor was a nice added touch with its wood fuel slowly burning to warm us up from the cool Autumn day. If you have never been to Highland, just about an hour southwest of Harrisonburg, you owe it to yourself to go.  The area is complete with a thriving maple sugar industry, sheep and cattle grazing in the meadows and on terraced hillsides.  It’s because of these attributes that Highland is called Virginia's little Switzerland, with the highest mean elevation east of the Mississippi (but nothing like the Alps), and possibly the lowest population density as well (2,500 residents).

The leaves were at their absolute peak over in the extreme western portions of Highland County; the best colors being in the Blue Grass Valley and on the adjacent eastern slopes and peaks of the mountainous Virginia/West Virginia border.  They glowed brilliantly in hews of red, orange and yellow against a backdrop of pine and spruce green; reflecting the sunlight against a deep azure blue sky. Go a few more miles on into West Virginia and the colors are more muted with red and other oaks predominating.

The Hightown cross roads in western Highland’s Blue Grass Valley is ground zero for the dividing line between the James and Potomac rivers' watersheds.  In fact, a farm located there features a barn with roof orientation having northeast and southwest pitches.  Rain and snow melt water on the south pitch flows eventually to the James River; that on the north flows into the Potomac; and it all ends up in the Chesapeake Bay.

The second stop was the National Radio Astronomy Observatory in Green Bank West Virginia. The Observatory is home to the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope, the largest fully steerable dish in the world. The stop provided an opportunity to relax and take in some interesting science and technology.

The third stop was near the golf and spa resort, The Homestead, for an opportunity to grab a bite to eat and chat about the great roads and scenery we had driven up to that point. It was also a time to get to know each other a little better

The last leg of the Fun Run took us in an easterly direction from The Homestead on a route that would lead us through two series of mountain crossings and a fourth stop at the spectacular Goshen Pass overlook with some incredible twisty roads up and down the mountains accompanied by the gorgeous autumn views of the Appalachian Mountains.

The final stop was for a group dinner at Osceola Mill restaurant and bed & breakfast. The evening gathering at the Osceola Mill B&B made for a perfect end of a great day. Hosts and owners Kim and Kevin Daly are warm, hard working and most accommodating. They have been having us back for years, first at their former B&B, the Buckhorn Inn in western Augusta County and for the past two years at one of Cyrus McCormick’s old mills located in Rockbridge County.

The charity focus continues to be Parkinson’s Research at the University of Virginia. From this and recent past runs the Potomac-Chesapeake chapter has raised thousands of dollars for the cause. This Fun Run raised approximately $580 through a $20 per car entry fee plus a couple extra donations from members at dinner, and a very generous donation from Kim and Kevin Daly.

The Fun Run was declared a great success by all in attendance and it was truly evident by the smiles, stories and enthusiasm shared at the Osceola Mill. Plans are already in the works to do it once again next year. Sincere thanks go out to John Galloway and Reggie Forster for doing another outstanding job of running a very successful event in bringing members together in the spirit as the Club intended.

For some great photos of the run by participant Evan Sokol go to the Audi World Mid-Atlantic Forum.
